Plácido Domingo has devoted his life to opera and zarzuela through a career spanning more than six decades as a singer and conductor. He has interpreted over 150 roles and has been acclaimed by audiences worldwide in more than 4,000 performances, in both the tenor and baritone repertoire.
Widely regarded by international critics as a true “Renaissance man,” he has received numerous honorary titles and some of the most prestigious distinctions, including 12 Grammy Awards, as well as notable honors such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom of the United States, the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, and the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit. He serves as Honorary Ambassador of Spain’s World Heritage and Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO.
He is one of the foremost ambassadors of zarzuela, bringing this lyric genre to the world’s most prestigious stages to wide acclaim, placing it on artistic parity with opera, and contributing decisively to its international recognition and projection.
Plácido Domingo has shown a lifelong dedication to the development and promotion of young artists. In 1993, he founded Operalia, The World Opera Competition, widely regarded as the most prestigious of its kind. Since 1995, it has included a special zarzuela category, encouraging the interpretation of this genre by young artists from around the world.
Moreover, convinced that art should be accessible to all and that musical education is key to personal growth and artistic excellence, he established the Young Artist Programs at the Los Angeles, Washington, and Valencia opera houses, also serving as Artistic and General Director of the first two.
Beyond the stage, Plácido Domingo has remained deeply committed to humanitarian causes, leading and taking part in campaigns supporting victims of natural disasters and collaborating on charitable initiatives across various countries.
His example inspires the Foundation’s social action, which carries forward a spirit of solidarity first expressed in 1985 following the Mexico earthquake and extended to emergency situations around the world.
